Malachite is a wonderful deep green copper mineral that has been prized for centuries as an ornamental stone in sculpture and as high quality interior decor. It has formations can that range from massive aggregates to fine-grained powders, and its green color is a result of copper hydroxide. Malachite has been a popular ornamental stone for centuries and has served in many different ways. It was used for jewellery and decoration in Ancient Egypt and even served as the symbol for the Fourth Dynasty of the priesthood of the Egyptian pharaohs. It is also believed to have had a spiritual significance, as it was often associated with the gods Osiris, Sekhmet, Hathor and Taweret.
Malachite is a semi-transparent stone that is often polished to a high sheen. It has a “glassy” luster and appears chalky or velvety at times. It is often banded or concentrically marked, often with swirls, veining, and dendritic growths. Its main colour is a deep lush green, but it can also display bright blues, yellows, and browns. Its inclusions usually consist of white specks of pyrite, calcite, quartz, and other minerals. The streak of malachite is pale to bright green.
Malachite is chemically stable and does not alter under contact with most types of light or heat, so it is often used as a protective stone.
