The name pyrite comes from the Greek and is derived from the word fire, because sparks often fly from it after being struck.
Pyrite is a very abundant mineral and an important iron ore. It usually has a golden color, for which it is sometimes confused with gold by the uninitiated, which is why it is also sometimes called fool's gold or cat's gold.
